Ugadi
Ugadi also known as Gudi Padwa is celebrated primarily in the southern part of India. People in Maharastra celebrate it as Gudi Padwa and in Andra Pradesh is referred at Ugaadi. It is actually celebrated as New Year according to some people.
The celebrations on the day begin with the ritual bath in the morning and certain special food items like puran poli (bobbatlu) are prepared.In Maharatshtra people erect "gudi" that is an earthern pot with a saffron cloth in it at the end of stick. It is called gudi. Gudi symbolizes Brahma's flag. The flag also symbolizes the vistory of Lord Rama over Raaavan.The Gudi can been seen placed in windows in many houses.
People also do spring cleaning this time of the year and the yards are swept clean and decorated with Rangoli. Families also eat the bitter sweet neem leaf symboliocally. It is believed to purify blood and increase immunity.
